BABY: Cheesy Mashed Potato

potatoes

Weaning your baby can be daunting as a new first-time parent. There are lots of helpful books out there such as those by Annabel Karmel or even Joe Wicks. However, sometimes the most basic fruits and vegetables that you have at home can form delicious quick and simple baby food purees. Read on to see how I made my own cheesy mashed potato recipe for my children when they were weaning.

Check out my baby puree Apple and Cinnamon recipe here too for more weaning food ideas.

To make three small pots of cheesy mashed potato, you will need the following ingredients:

1. 6 small new potatoes (2 potatoes per pot)

2. 2 tbsp butter

3. 75g grated cheddar cheese

4. Salt and pepper to taste

5. (optional 2oz of expressed breast milk to add)

Step 1

Boil your potatoes in a large saucepan on a medium heat for approximately 25 minutes or until they become soft.

Meanwhile, grate the cheddar cheese in a small bowl and cover it to keep it fresh.

Step 2

Once your potatoes are cooked, drain the water from them and return them to the saucepan. Add in the butter and grated cheese and mash the mixture together. Add a little salt and pepper to taste and the breast milk if you are including it.

Step 3

Transfer your cheesy mashed potato puree to the three little plastic pots and there you have it! (Allow to fully cool before attaching the lids or freezing). You could always use ice cube trays or Tupperware to store the mash.

If you store it in the fridge, consume within one week and reheat in the microwave to use. (Always transfer it to a microwave-safe bowl first). If you freeze it, consume within a few months.

It’s a great idea to get into the habit of labelling any homemade food that you freeze with the date you made it. This can help you know when to use it all up by.

I like to use white sticky labels on my pots which can then be washed off with hot soapy water once the pots are finished, ready for the next batch of baby food.

I hope you enjoy making this recipe at home for your baby as much as I did.
